• being sick
• increased sensitivity to light and sound, which is why many people with migraine want to rest in a quiet, dark room

Some people also occasionally experience other symptoms, including:

• sweating
• poor concentration,
• feeling very hot or very cold
• tummy (abdominal) pain
• diarrhoea

Not everyone with a migraine experiences these additional symptoms and some people may experience them without having a headache. The symptoms of a migraine usually last between 4 hours and 3 days, although you may feel very tired for up to a week afterwards.

The exact cause of migraines is unknown, although they’re thought to be the result of temporary changes in the chemicals, nerves and blood vessels in the brain. Around half of all people who experience migraines also have a close relative with the condition, suggesting that genes may play a role.

Some people find migraine attacks are associated with certain triggers, which can include:

• starting their period
• stress
• tiredness
• certain foods or drinks

Other causes may trigger a migraine, but common factors are listed above.

Alcohol can exacerbate the unpleasant side effects of Zolmitriptan such as dizziness and nausea so are not recommended when taking this course of treatment. There are no food products that decrease the effectiveness of Zolmitriptan.

• Fluvoxamine
• Isocarboxazid
• Phenelzine
• Tranylcypromine

You should inform your doctor if you are taking any other medication including migraine medication:

• if you take a triptan other than zolmitriptan (such as sumatriptan or naratriptan) leave 24 hours before taking Zolmitriptan.
• after taking Zolmitriptan leave 24 hours before taking any other triptans.
• if you take medicines containing ergotamine or ergot-type medicines (such as dihydroergotamine or methysergide), leave 24 hours before taking Zolmitriptan.
• after taking Zolmitriptan leave 6 hours before taking ergotamine or ergot-type medicines

You should not take the herbal remedy St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum) at the same time as this medicine. If you already take a St. John’s wort preparation, stop taking it and mention this to your doctor at your next visit.

You CANNOT take Zolmitriptan tablets if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients
• You have high blood pressure
• You have ever had heart problems
• You have circulatory problems
• You have had a stroke
• You have severe kidney problems
• You are taking other medication for migraines
