What is Acnecide?

Acnecide Gel (Also referred to as Acnecide in our FAQ’s) contains the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide that attacks bacteria, which is often a main cause of acne. Acne often appears as blackheads or whiteheads; which people often refer to as pimples or spots but there are 6 main types of spot caused by Acne.

  • blackheads – small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin; they’re not filled with dirt, but are black because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces colour
  • whiteheads – have a similar appearance to blackheads, but may be firmer and will not empty when squeezed
  • Papules – small red bumps that may feel tender or sore
  • Pustules – similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre, caused by a build-up of pus
  • nodules – large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful
  • Cysts – the most severe type of spot caused by acne; they’re large pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scarring

Acnecide is used as a form of acne treatment and can be used for acne on the face, chest or back. You can buy Acnecide online from e-surgery!

The main ingredient of Acnecide is Benzoyl Peroxide, but ensure you read the other ingredients of the medication before you commence treatment in the Acnecide Gel patient information leaflet.

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin, and sometimes skin that’s hot or painful to touch. Acne commonly develops on the face, chest, and back. Acne is commonly linked to a change in hormone levels which can happen in puberty and menstrual cycles, as well as to genetic factors.

There is not always a known cause for Acne, but it is very common and affects around 95% of people aged 11-30 to some extent. For mild to moderate Acne often a pharmacist will be able to offer you creams and treatments that can help reduce acne pimples.

Other information on the causes of acne can be read about on the NHS website.

How else can I prevent Acne?

Some ways that are recommended to prevent acne flare-ups include:

  • Not washing the affected area more than twice a day
  • Use a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water
  • Do not try to “clean out” blackheads or squeeze spots. This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring.
  • Avoid using too much make-up and cosmetics. Use water-based products that are described as non-comedogenic.
  • Completely remove make-up before going to bed.
  • If dry skin is a problem, use a fragrance-free water-based emollient.
  • Regular exercise cannot improve your acne, but it can boost your mood and improve your self-esteem. Shower as soon as possible once you finish exercising as sweat can irritate your acne.
  • Wash your hair regularly and try to avoid letting your hair fall across your face

It may take some time before you find an acne treatment right for you, please read about other available acne treatments if Acnecide does not work for you.
