What are Omeprazole capsules?

Omeprazole capsules are a form of proton pump inhibitor, which works by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach produces. Omeprazole capsules are often used to treat acid reflux, as well as a variety of other acid/stomach related issues. Acid reflux is common, and can appear from time to time (occasionally without an obvious cause) and go away on its own. For others, it is a more consistent problem that will require intervening, which could be lifestyle changes or medication such as Omeprazole capsules.

Some common causes of acid reflux are:

  • certain food and drink such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods
  • being overweight
  • smoking
  • pregnancy
  • stress and anxiety
  • some medicines, such as anti-inflammatory painkillers (like ibuprofen)
  • a hiatus hernia when part of your stomach moves up into your chest

Omeprazole capsules are a great way to prevent the pain and discomfort that can come with acid reflux. Omeprazole capsules are available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg capsules, in quantities of 14, 28 and 56 per pack. Depending on your specific symptoms a doctor or pharmacist will prescribe you different dosages and how long to take them.

For heartburn and acid reflux the recommended amount is 10mg Omeprazole capsule taken once a day for 4-8 weeks, this increases to 20mg if the gullet or throat is damaged. It is very much down to what is best for your specific condition and the severity of the acid reflux you are experiencing.

You can buy Omeprazole capsules online from a trusted pharmacy like e-surgery or at your local GP where prescriptions are issues as this product is prescription only. If you buy Omeprazole through e-Surgery we will require a short 2-minute health questionnaire to check you are receiving the correct medication and can be delivered to your front door.

How do you take Omeprazole capsules?

You can use our free Ask-A-Pharmacist service to find out more about Omeprazole capsules and alternative acid reflux medication.

Interactions of Omeprazole capsules with alcohol and food?

There are no known adverse effects when consuming alcohol when taking Omeprazole capsules. Though alcohol can be a trigger for acid reflux in general so is best avoided in large quantities.

There are no known food interactions with Omeprazole capsules. There is some evidence suggesting you can be more susceptible to gastroenteritis when taking Omeprazole capsules. This might be due to Omeprazole capsules making your stomach less acidic and less capable of killing bacteria in the food you ingest, therefore make sure you cook your food thoroughly when taking Omeprazole capsules. As with alcohol spicy or fatty foods can cause acid reflux so if these types of foods are triggers they are best avoided in large quantities.
